This one-day course explores the additional challenges children and young people with neurodevelopmental disorders and neurodisability face and how paediatricians can adapt and maximise their contribution to the safeguarding process.

Background
This one-day online course aims to develop paediatricians’ understanding of how to adapt their approach to support children and young people with neurodevelopmental disorders and neurodisability who are also experiencing safeguarding issues.
The faculty will consist of senior paediatricians who have extensive experience in safeguarding and working with children with neurodevelopmental disorders and neurodisability.
There will be an opportunity to engage in a multi-disciplinary panel discussion to understand the role of other professionals, share learning and understand how best to work together.
You will also hear from a leading national children’s charity who will share research on the topic.
Course aim
To equip paediatricians to understand the additional challenges faced by children and young people with neurodevelopmental disorders and neurodisability involved in child protection cases and how to adapt to best support them.
Learning outcomes
By the end of the course, delegates will be able to:
- Recognise the ways in which the additional needs of children and young people with neurodevelopmental disorders and/or neurodisability may impact on the child protection processes
- Describe possible signs and presentations of children and young people with neurodevelopmental disorders and / or neurodisability affected by safeguarding issues within the clinical setting
- Outline how to adapt their practice and communication to support children and young people with neurodevelopmental disorders and/or neurodisability during child protection processes including signposting to relevant organisations

Because of the focus on UK legislation, policy and practice, this course is best suited to paediatricians working in the UK. Please ensure you are also up-to-date with standard safeguarding policies and procedures as these will not be covered in the course.
