National Paediatric Diabetes Audit (NPDA) - data submission

We are accepting data for the 2024-25 audit year on the old NPDA Portal, and the deadline is 25 April.

We are now also accepting data for the 2025-26 audit year on the new NPDA platform. We encourage you to continue to submit your data on a quarterly basis.

The data submission deadlines for each quarter are listed on this page. You can also download the dataset and CSV submission template, and see our guides to both the old NPDA Portal and the new NPDA platform.

The following information is about the NPDA core audit.

Which centres are eligible to participate in the NPDA?

All paediatric diabetes units in England, Wales and Jersey.

However, children and young people are not eligible for the NPDA if they:

  • are receiving care from non-NHS organisations (England, Wales and Jersey)
  • have a diagnosis of gestational diabetes.

The NPDA is exempted from the National Data Opt Out. Unless a patient specifically requests to opt out of the audit, you should enter their data.

Dataset - information

We ask that PDUs in England, Wales and Jersey submit data from all patient visits. You should include data relating to all children and young people with all types of diabetes under the care of a paediatrician within your PDU.

PDUs can submit data throughout the audit year. We encourage you to submit your data on a quarterly basis.

After you submit, you will see summary results in the patient report (was the data completeness report).

You can download the dataset (including notes) for both audit years in the Downloads section below. You can download the CSV submission template for both audit years here

NHS England’s Hybrid closed loop (HCL) technologies

For English PDUs, data from the NPDA is shared with NHS England in support of the HCL implementation strategy and reimbursement funding. To support reimbursement, we are asking PDUs to submit a visit when a patient starts a new treatment, even if they haven’t had a clinic visit. This should include the visit date (date item 13) and treatment questions (data items 20, 21 and 22). This is particularly important for new HCL users.

This will be sent to NHS England to support reimbursement but dropped from NPDA analysis if it doesn’t have an associated HbA1c. For Twinkle users, Hicom are making this change to the NPDA extract. When a patient starts a new treatment enter a visit into the Twinkle system with the new treatment recorded and it will be included in your extract.
